STANTON - Playing on the road in an early-season matchup late last week, Magoffin County fell short of posting its second win, falling to Powell County. Host Powell County, entertaining Magoffin County for a season-opener, passed the early-season test, defeating the visiting Hornets 27-18.
With the win, Powell County opened the season 1-0.
As a result of the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 1-1.
Powell County, under the direction of veteran head coach Tony Burchett, rushed for 312 yards in the win. Leading the Pirates on the ground, Chance Snowden rushed 15 times for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Aiding the Powell County offensive attack. quarterback Jake Whitt and Nate Brooks rushed for one touchdown each in the non-district win.
Whitt, who was 0-for-4 passing, rushed 10 times for 44 yards and the one score.
Another Powell County back, Jeremiah Richardson, rushed six times for 68 yards in the victory.
Defensively for Powell County, Hank Tindall registered a team-best six tackles.
In the setback, Magoffin County quarterback Ryan Jenkins completed 23 of 34 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns. Jenkins completed six passes for 105 yards and one touchdown to Devan Ables.
Dalton Keeton hauled in a team-high 13 receptions for 81 yards and two touchdowns for the Hornets.
Helping Jenkins to spread the football around, Gareth Gray grabbed four receptions for 66 yards.
Limited on the ground, Magoffin County picked up 55 rushing yards via 17 attempts.
Defensively, Josh Poe paced Scotty McCoy-coached Magoffin County with 16 total tackles. Gray registered 13 tackles, Cody Mullins 11 and Ables 10.
Magoffin County came up short on each of its three two-point conversion attempts.
Homestanding Powell County posted a win over the Hornets for the second straight year.
