SALYERSVILLE - The month of December will offer preseason 15th Region girls' basketball favorite Magoffin County plenty of competition.
Just a little over two weeks away from its season-opener versus Betsy Layne on Dec. 6, Magoffin County also has two holiday tournaments looming on the December portion of its 2013-14 schedule. The Lady Hornets will venture to Leslie County and Shelby Valley for separate holiday tournaments during the month of December. Magoffin County will compete in a Leslie County-hosted event before Christmas and then take part in Shelby Valley's tournament after the holiday.
The Hyden Citizens Bank Shootout is scheduled for Dec. 20-22 at Leslie County and will also feature Harlan, Elliott County, Knox Central, Fort Knox, Middlesboro and Buckhorn.
Magoffin County is matched up against Harlan in a game set for the Hyden Citizens Bank Shootout on Dec. 20.
Leslie County is ranked second behind Perry County Central in multiple preseason 14th Region girls' basketball polls.
After taking a break for Christmas, Magoffin County will compete in the Appalachian Wireless Christmas Connection at Shelby Valley Dec. 26-28. Shelby Valley, Magoffin County, Betsy Layne, Franklin County, Harlan County and Clintwood, Va. will make up the field for the Appalachian Wireless Christmas Connection. Currently, the Lady Hornets are paired up with Franklin County and Harlan County in two games in the Appalachian Wireless-sponsored holiday tournament.
Shelby Valley is the reigning 15th Region girls' basketball champion.
The month of December will also afford the Lady Hornets additional games against Paintsville (Dec. 13), Powell County (Dec. 14) and Lawrence County (Dec. 17).
Magoffin County, a team under the direction of head coach Scott Castle, continues to practice in the preseason. The Lady Hornets are ranked first in The Cats' Pause 2013-14 Kentucky Baseball Yearbook's Preseason 15th Region Girls' Basketball Poll. Two-time defending 15th Region All "A" Classic champion Magoffin County boasts three starters from last year's team that finished 17-13.
