SALYERSVILLE - A Magoffin County man was arrested last Friday for allegedly shoplifting at a Salyersville store.

According to the arrest citation, Kentucky State Police was called to Parkway Drive Family Dollar on March 7 for a shoplifting complaint. Two store cashiers stated to law enforcement that they observed Willis S. Prater, 27, of Half Mountain Rd., Salyersville, walking in and out of the store multiple times, once with a bulge under his coat, allegedly.

State Police Trooper J. Neace reported that he asked for permission to search Prater's vehicle and was given consent. Upon searching the vehicle, Neace and Salyersville Police Department Officer Blake Isaac found packs of socks and underwear, as well as packaging for phone cases.

Prater stated to law enforcement he purchased the items at Walmart and Dollar General, however police had the Family Dollar store manager scan the items. The manager stated that if the items had come from a different store, they would not scan. Prater could not provide receipts for the items, according to the citation.

Prater was arrested and charged with one count of theft by unlawful taking, shoplifting under $500. He was housed and released at the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, pending future court dates.

According to the citation, the merchandise totaled approximately over $40.
