BUCKLEYS CREEK - Sophomore pitcher Hannah Skaggs threw a one-hitter and a host of Lady Hornets contributed offensively as Magoffin County defeated host Pike County Central 11-1 in five innings via the Kentucky High School Athletic Association's 10-Run Mercy Rule on Monday.
Skaggs struck out 13 of the 17 batters she faced in the early-season high school softball game. The Magoffin County pitcher only gave up one hit and one walk in her latest outing.
With the win, Magoffin County improved to 3-2. The Lady Hornets notched their second straight win.
Following the loss, Pike County Central fell to 3-2. The Lady Hawks suffered their second straight setback.
Defending 15th Region champion Magoffin County dominated. The Chester McCoy-coached Lady Hornets used a seven outburst in the fourth inning to fend off 15th Region rival Pike County Central.
Magoffin County pushed across one run in the top half of the first inning and maintained the one-run advantage until the third frame. After a scoreless second inning, the Lady Hornets scored two runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead.
With the three-run cushion, Magoffin County erupted for seven runs in the fourth inning to move out in front 10-0.
Host Pike County Central scored its lone run in the bottom half of the fourth inning. The Lady Hawks, however, couldn't match Magoffin County offensively.
Magoffin County scored once in the top half of the fifth inning and held Pike County Central scoreless in the bottom of the frame to force the game to end with the 10-Run Mercy Rule being in effect.
Offensively, Laylee Burchell went 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs for the Lady Hornets. Burchell scored four runs as part of her productive offensive performance.
Leslee Howard also turned in a multi-hit performance, finishing 3-for-3 with a game-high three RBIs. Finishing one big swing shy of hitting for the cycle, Howard delivered a single, a double and a triple for the Lady Hornets.
Helping her cause at the plate, Skaggs added three RBIs for the Lady Hornets.
Skaggs, Jazzy Howard, Alyssa Kennard, Madison Reed, Darci Arnett, Erin Bolen and Kia Bolen each had one hit for Magoffin County in the convincing victory.
Magoffin County is scheduled to host Pike County Central on April 25.
