HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Lady Hornets turn back Allen Central

SALYERSVILLE - Defending 15th Region champion Magoffin County, playing at home, notched its fifth straight win on Tuesday, defeating former 58th District frontrunner Allen Central 14-2 in five innings.

Magoffin County pitcher Laylee Burchell earned the win. Burchell allowed two runs on four hits and registered a pair of strikeouts.

Magoffin County improved to 6-2 after posting the win. The Lady Hornets remain atop the 15th Region standings.  

Allen Central slipped to 1-5 after suffering the loss. The Lady Rebels dropped back into the loss column after posting a four-run win over 58th District foe South Floyd on Friday. 

Magoffin County took control of its non-district game versus Allen Central early. Allen Central, however, scored first, pushing across one run in the top half of the first inning. 

Magoffin County scored three runs in the bottom half of the opening inning to lead 3-1. Then, after holding visiting Allen Central in the top half of the second inning, Magoffin County manufactured three more runs to move out in front 6-1. 

Following a scoreless frame, Allen Central scored another in the fourth inning. But Magoffin County responded in a big way. The Lady Hornets, under the guidance of second-year head coach Chester McCoy, countered with eight runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning to lead 14-2.

Allen Central went scoreless in the top half of the fifth inning as the game ended via the KHSAA 10-Run Mercy Rule. 

Productive Magoffin County scored 14 runs on 14 hits. Burchell, Jazzy Howard and Darci Arnett led the Magoffin County offensive effort with three hits apiece. Howard delivered a game-high three RBIs for the Lady Hornets. 

Kia Bolen added two hits and Madison Reed contributed two RBIs for Magoffin County in the non-district victory.

Reed, Hannah Skaggs and Leslee Howard each had one hit. 

Burchell, Skaggs, Leslee Howard and Bolen had one RBI apiece for the Magoffin County softball squad.

The Lady Hornets were charged with two errors. 

Longtime rivals, Magoffin County and Allen Central are scheduled to meet in Floyd County at the Lady Rebels' home field on May 15.
