GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Lady Hornets fall short at Johnson Central

PAINTSVILLE - The Magoffin County Lady Hornets came up short in their latest 57th District game. Host Johnson Central prevented Magoffin County from claiming its third straight win, holding on to defeat the visiting Lady Hornets 57-53 on Friday night. 

With the win, Johnson Central improved to 14-10 overall and 3-2 in the 57th District 

Following the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 10-11 overall and 3-3 in the district. 

Johnson Central earned the win despite shooting only 37 percent (17-of-46) from the field. The Lady Eagles, however, shot 50 percent (9-of-18) from 3-point range.

Helping its cause with the clock stopped, Johnson Central shot 66.7 percent (14-of-21) from the free throw line. 

Thriving around the basket, Johnson Central outrebounded district rival Magoffin County 32-22. 

Lauren Delong led Johnson Central with 19 points. Accompanying Delong in double figures, Bailey Daniel netted 17 points for the Lady Eagles. 

Paige McPeek scored eight points and Jayla Spurlock added five for Johnson Central in the district victory. 

Other scorers for Johnson Central were Lauryn Salyer (three points), Ali May (two points), Micailyn Pierce (two points) and Lauren Preston (one point).

Leading Johnson Central inside, Salyer grabbed nine points. 

Spurlock added seven rebounds for the Lady Eagles in the win. 

Magoffin County shot 42.5 percent (17-of-40) from the field. The Lady Hornets finished 5-of-13 (38.5 percent) from 3-point range. 

Magoffin County shot 87.5 percent (14-of-16) from the free throw.

Jassmine Howard led Magoffin County with a double-double. Howard scored 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, both game-highs. 

Joining her sister in double figures, Leslee Howard added 12 points for the Lady Hornets.

Alexis Montgomery and Allie Ohair rounded out the Magoffin County scoring, finishing with nine and four points, respectively. 

Magoffin County and Johnson Central split their annual two-game district series. When the two teams met on Jan. 9, Magoffin County defeated Johnson Central 75-58. 

Magoffin County is scheduled to host Powell County on Thursday night. The Lady Hornets have additional regular-season games remaining versus Breathitt County and Morgan County.
