BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Hornets fall to Johnson Central in 57th District Tournament

PAINTSVILLE - The Magoffin County Hornets’ season ended with a loss to three-time defending 15th Region champion Johnson Central in the first round of the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament at the Paul R. Setser Fieldhouse on Wednesday night. Playing on its home floor, Johnson Central pulled away to defeat the Hornets 85-64.

With the win, Johnson County improved to 20-8, advanced to the 57th District championship game and qualified for the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament.

Johnson Central head coach Tommy McKenzie, the reigning 15th Region Coach of the Year, notched his fifth consecutive 20-win season with the Golden Eagles. 

As a result of the loss, Magoffin County concluded its 2014-15 season 9-18.

Johnson Central shot 47.6 percent (30-of-63) from the field. The Golden Eagles finished 9-of-26 (34.6 percent) from 3-point range. 

Johnson Central shot 66.7 percent (16-of-24) from the free throw line.  

Five Johnson Central players reached double figures in the scoring column as part of a balanced attack. Mason Blair paced Johnson Central with a game-high 20 points. Dalton Adkins scored 17 points, Kyle Gullett 14, Braxton Blair 12 and Josh Hitchcock 11 for the Golden Eagles. 

Braxton Blair dished out a game-high seven assists and Patrick Rice grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and made a career-high six steals for Johnson Central in the victory.  

Jaren Lovely and Trenton Russell paced Magoffin County with 15 points apiece. Russell registered a double-double, pulling down 14 rebounds for the Hornets.

Lovely and Russell dished out four and three assists, respectively.

Accompanying Lovely and Russell in double figures, Ryan Mullins netted 11 points for the Hornets. Sharing game-high rebounding honors with Johnson Central’s Rice, Mullins chased down seven caroms for the Hornets. The productive Mullins also recorded three steals.

Johnson Central advanced to meet Sheldon Clark in the 57th District championship game.
