Herald Whitaker continues basketball success
Special to the Independent

The Herald Whitaker Middle School basketball program continued to enjoy success last week with a pair of wins at Belfry.
Cody Bailey hit for a team high 13 points to help the seventh grade Hornets claim a 51-20 victory and the high scoring antics of Jeffrey Bolen and strong board work by Timmy Joseph and Corey Pitts led the eighth grade squad to a 48-28 victory.
Bolen tossed in a total of 20 points and Joseph added 10 points to go with a team high 12 rebounds. Pitts finished the game with 10 rebounds.
Both wins came last Wednesday night. Herald Whitaker’s eighth grade victory upped the team’s record to 17-6, including five straight wins dating back to just before the holiday break.
Cory Pitts sent the Hornets on a positive vacation when, on December 17, his three-point buzzer beater gave the team a 54-51 victory and presented head coach Robbie Russell with his first ever win over Sebastian.
Pitts finished with 16 while Jeffrey Bolen scored a team high 23 points. Timmy Joseph recorded a total of 15 rebounds.
The Hornets continued their winning ways on into the new year by claiming two victories at the Knott County SportsPlex on January 9.
Jeffrey Bolen, Cory Pitts, Dalton Keeton, Timmy Howard, and Timmy Joseph reached double figure scoring in both games, with Bolen’s two-game total of 28 leading the way.
In a 71-32 win over Robinson Creek, Kiam Bain, who Coach Russell praised for his strong floor game and on-court leadership, scored six points.
Sharp shooting Trucker Howard also enjoyed a solid outing against Robinson Creek and tossed in six points. Will Porter and Cody Bailey hit for two points apiece.
During the impressive run, Herald Whitaker took to the road January 15 and came back from Louisa with a 41-27 win over the eighth grade version of Bulldog basketball.
Bolen led the offensive way with 16 and got plenty of support from Timmy Howard, who hit for a total of 13. Timmy Joseph was again stout on the boards, hauling down 16 rebounds.
Herald Whitaker’s post season conference tournament is scheduled to start Saturday in Louisa, but exact pairings and times were not set as of press time.
