Hornets top Pike County Central, drop game to Pikeville

SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County is 1-1 in the young 2017 Kentucky high school baseball season after splitting away games with Pike County Central and Pikeville. 

The Hornets, under the guidance of head coach Steve Miller, pulled away to defeat host Pike County Central 12-2 in six innings in a season-opener on March 9.  

Following a lengthy layoff, Magoffin County returned to the diamond on the road earlier in the week. Pikeville, however, prevented Magoffin County from remaining in the win column. Homestanding Pikeville beat the visiting Hornets 13-5 on Tuesday. 

With the loss, Magoffin County slipped to 1-1.

Pikeville moved to 5-0 with the win. 

Magoffin County is scheduled to host 14th Region Powell County for a home opener on Friday. First pitch for the Magoffin County-Powell County baseball game is set for 6 p.m.

The Hornets ended the 2016 season 12-13 after falling to Sheldon Clark in the opening round of the 57th District Baseball Tournament.

Magoffin County has additional regular-season games scheduled versus Prestonsburg, Rowan County, Betsy Layne, Morgan County, Knott County Central, Perry County Central, Johnson Central, Shelby Valley, Bath County, Paintsville, Belfry, Sheldon Clark, Russell, Barren County, Allen Central,

Pikeville, Betsy Layne, Pike County Central and Powell County.  

The Hornets are slated to visit Prestonsburg for a regular-season finale on May 20. 

Magoffin County is scheduled to compete in the Frank Bloom Invitational at Russell on April 29.
