PAINTSVILLE - Magoffin County finished runner-up to familiar rival Johnson Central in the 57th District Softball Tournament. Johnson Central, playing on its home field, pulled away to defeat the Lady Hornets 13-1 in six innings in the 57th District Softball Tournament title game on Friday afternoon.
Dominant Johnson Central claimed its second consecutive 57th District title.
With the win, Johnson Central improved to 14-9.
Magoffin County slipped to 11-11 with the loss.
Both Johnson Central and Magoffin County advanced to the 15th Region Softball Tournament at Pike County Central High School.
Veteran Johnson Central pitcher Micailyn Pierce tossed a four-hitter. Pierce, who ranks as one of the state's top high school softball pitchers, recorded nine strikeouts.
Sophomore Abi Fannin delivered three RBIs for the Lady Eagles. Following Fannin's productive effort, Annie Vanhoose and Alyssa Hedrick added two RBIs apiece for Johnson Central in the victory.
Fannin and Hedrick each had three hits for the Lady Eagles.
The victory allowed Johnson Central to stretch its winning streak to five games.
Magoffin County pitcher Mahallie Ratliff suffered the loss.
Brooklyn Poe, Jordan Blair, Erin Bolen and Morgan Wilson delivered one hit apiece for the Lady Hornets.
Defensively, Magoffin County committed three errors in the setback.
Along with Johnson Central and Magoffin County, East Ridge, Lawrence County, South Floyd, Pikeville, Betsy Layne and Belfry advanced to the 15th Region Softball Tournament.
