First Lady Jane Beshear today recognized North Magoffin Elementary School for earning the prestigious ENERGY STAR, a national symbol for protecting the environment through superior energy performance.
A certificate, signed by Governor Steve Beshear, was presented to the principal and students during an assembly. The school building was recently renovated to achieve greater energy efficiency, as demonstrated by 12 months of actual energy usage data. Renovations to the building included energy efficient Water Source Heat Pump systems with multiple zone pumps, outside air ventilation with energy recovery, cooling tower with energy efficient variable speed drive, a highly efficient condensing direct vent boiler, automatic control for lighting systems and direct digital temperature controls for systems optimization and scheduling. These renovations resulted in energy savings of more than $15,000 per year.
With the addition of this building, Kentucky now has 92 buildings that have received the ENERGY STAR designation, with 51 school buildings represented in the state. ENERGY STAR facilities typically use about 35 per cent less energy than average buildings, while still providing high-quality service and comfort to their occupants and visitors, according to the ENERGY STAR program.
“The Governor and I commend North Magoffin Elementary School for serving as an example of how to be responsible environmental stewards. Energy efficiency is a vital component of the Governor’s goal to reduce Kentucky’s energy consumption by 18 percent by 2025,” said Mrs. Beshear. “Receiving the ENERGY STAR is an immense accomplishment and we hope that other schools across Kentucky will follow North Magoffin’s lead.”
