Hornets fall to Harlan County in Buffalo Wild Wings Shootout; Whitaker scores game-high 26 points for Magoffin County in setback

BUCKLEYS CREEK - The Magoffin County Hornets faced another tough challenge on the road on a neutral court over the weekend. Harlan County, a contender for the 13th Region title, prevented Magoffin County from returning to the win column, defeating the Hornets 78-55 in the Buffalo Wild Wings Shootout at Pike County Central High School. 

The victory allowed Harlan County to remain unbeaten in the young 2017-18 season. 

With the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 1-7. 

Undefeated Harlan County moved to 7-0 with the win. 

Harlan County shot 51.7 percent (31-of-60) from the field. The Black Bears were 1-of-8 from 3-point range. 

Harlan County shot 78.9 percent (15-of-19) from the free throw line. 

Dominating on the backboards, Harlan County outrebounded Magoffin County 33-14. 

Tyrese Simmons paced Harlan County with 25 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. 

Three Harlan County players combined to nearly match the Hornets in the scoring column as Andrew Creech netted 16 points and Alex Pace added 11 points for the Black Bears. 

Flirting with double figures for Harlan County, Taylor Spurlock posted nine points. 

Magoffin County lost despite shooting 52.6 percent (20-of-68) from the field. The Hornets were 4-of-12 (33.3 percent) from 3-point range. 

Magoffin County shot 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from the free throw line. 

Brady Whitaker led Magoffin County with a game-high 26 points. Whitaker connected on 10 of 15 shots (two-point and three-point) from the field in the game against unfamiliar foe Harlan County. 

Magoffin County featured three scorers in double figures as Logan Lovely netted 11 points and Chandler Lykins added 10 points. 

Other scorers for the Hornets were Dylan Arnett (three points), Michael Conley (three points), Morgan Howard (three points), Mason Lovely (two points), Jackson Salyer (one point) and Kaeleb Wages (one point). 

In the other games played in the Buffalo Wild Wings Shootout on Saturday it was Johnson Central 61, Eastern 49; Southwestern 63, Elliott County 47; Pike County Central 69, Breathitt County 63; Knott County Central 52, Belfry 49; George Washington (W.Va.) 74, Knox Central 65 and Chapmanville (W.Va.) 74, Floyd Central 60.
