SALYERSVILLE - The Magoffin County Hornets are preparing to host the Lawrence County Bulldogs for a home opener on Friday, Aug. 24.
Both Magoffin County and Lawrence County will carry an 0-1 record into the Week 1 high school football game. The Hornets and Bulldogs will hook up in a non-district matchup.
East Carter pulled away to defeat visiting Magoffin County 47-12 on Friday night. The Raiders and Hornets met for a season opener.
In another season opener, Raceland upended host Lawrence County 31-12.
Tradition-rich Lawrence County competes in Class 3A, District 6, along with perennial state title contender, Belfry, Floyd Central, Pike County Central and Sheldon Clark.
Senior quarterback Noah West leads Lawrence County. The Preseason Class 3A, District 6 Player of the Year, West excelled on the ground for the Bulldogs throughout the 2017 season.
As a team in 2017, Lawrence County rushed for 3,820 yards. West accounted for 1,662 yards while teammate Ashton Blankenship rushed for 658 yards. Blankenship is also a senior for the Bulldogs.
Lawrence County finished behind upstart Floyd Central in the final 2017 Class 3, District 6 Standings. Waggener, an opponent out of Louisville, ended Lawrence County's season in 2017, beating the Bulldogs 41-24 in the opening round of the Class 3A Russell Athletic/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl.
The Hornets will look to show improvement both offensively and defensively when longtime rival Lawrence County visits for the early-season matchup.
Lucas Litteral, Brady Whitaker and Mason Lovely were among the leaders for Magoffin County during its season opener. Litteral completed eight passes for 116 yards and one touchdown but threw three interceptions. Pacing the Hornets on the ground, Whitaker rushed for a team-high 77 yards and one touchdown while Lovely recorded a team-high 11 tackles and added 34 rushing yards.
Kickoff for the Magoffin County-Lawrence County football game is set for 7:30 p.m.
