SALYERSVILLE – Magoffin County High School kicked off the Big Sandy Idol 2018 on Friday, with nine contestants vying for the top spot in the regional competition, to be held in March.
The Magoffin County Big Sandy Idol featured the Big Sandy Singers, including Magoffin County High School alum Isaac Perkins, who was runner-up in last year’s local competition. A total of nine contestants, all girls, with four freshmen, three sophomores and two juniors, competed in Friday night's Idol.
Laurel Pelphrey (sophomore) and Kailee Helton (junior) tied for runner-up, and Zoe Howard (freshman) secured first place with her rendition of Janis Joplin’s “Me & Bobby McGee.”
The three will go on compete in the Big Sandy Idol Regional Competition in March, and will be recording two song demos at the Mountain Arts Center this week.
The winner of the regional competition will receive a full ride to Big Sandy Community and Technical College, a spot with the Big Sandy Singers, money, trophies and will have many appearances.
