Hornets fall to Lawrence County

SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County was unable to land in the win column in Week 1 of the 2018 high school football season as visiting Lawrence County pulled away to win 44-14 on Friday night. 

Longtime rivals, Magoffin County and Lawrence County met in a non-district high school football game. The Hornets and Bulldogs hail from neighboring regions.  

Magoffin County dropped to 0-2 with the loss. 

With the win, Lawrence County evened its record to 1-1.

Senior quarterback Noah West led Lawrence County to the win. West thrived on the ground for the Bulldogs, rushing 22 times for 154 yards and four touchdowns.

As a team, Lawrence County rushed 40 times for 300 yards and six touchdowns.

Running back Ashton Blankenship finished second behind West in the Lawrence County rushing column. Blankenship rushed 15 times for 86 yards and one touchdown.

Another Lawrence County running back, Baden Gillespie, rushed for 54 yards and one touchdown via only two carries. 

Lawrence County scored first and never trailed, carrying a 14-0 lead out of the first quarter. The Bulldogs led 30-7 at intermission.

Magoffin County wasn't without some highlights in the home game. 

Brady Whitaker hauled in a 25-yard scoring pass from quarterback Lucas Litteral for the Hornets' first touchdown in the second quarter. Magoffin County added another touchdown in the third quarter when Grayson Lanning scored on a 72-yard run. 

Magoffin County managed to rush for 213 yards in the setback. 

Still, Lawrence County limited the Hornets' offensive attack. 

The Hornets remained in the loss column after dropping a season opener to East Carter.

Magoffin County is scheduled to host East Ridge for another non-district high school football game on Friday, Aug. 31.
