Brenda was born on April 1, 1942 in Magoffin County to the late Edward and Thelma Shepherd Vanderpool. Brenda is survived by her children: Tim (Sheila) Joseph and Kimberly (Gil) Howard. One sister: Marilee Prater and three grandchildren: Farley Joseph, Blake Howard and Noah Howard. One nephew Bruce and two nieces, Gina and Jill and one very special cousin Donnie Vanderpool.Brenda would always give to her children and grandchildren even when she didn’t have it to give. She was always concerned she didn’t get the right gist for any event, and she would prepare days in advance and even month for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Birthdays.Her favorite things were cooking for family and friends, and fishing and gardening. She enjoyed sharing cakes and pies to all those she cared for. Fishing was one of her favorite things to do, especially catching those big turtles. Gardening was not only for her, but for everyone. She would share with friends, family and anyone else who was in need. What she didn’t use right away was always canned and used for a later day. She also enjoyed a game of Rook, especially with the Holiday and Shepherd Clans; you never knew who got the angriest, her or Clyde.Let’s not forget her love and passion for the Kentucky Wildcats. As a committed fan she would never miss a game, always decked out in her Wildcat blue. She was always ready for the Cats to play the Cards, rooting for her Cats to defeat Rick Pitino who she called the Pinto Bean.We all knew not to get on her bad side because she could be a little stick of dynamite, but boy could she cut a rug. You’ve never seen little feet move so fast.She will be greatly missed by all those who shared a part in her life, not just for her great recipes or the will to keep fighting when times are tough but for the loving person she was.We love you Granny Brenda, or affectionately known as Pete.

 
Blanch Montgomery, age 90, a resident of Dayton, OH, formally of Salyersville, KY passed away March 2, 2010 in Dayton, OH.
Blanch was born April 20, 1919 in Salyersville, KY, the daughter of the late John Riley and Lucy Jenkins Montgomery.
Survivors include four sons; LB Montgomery of Plymouth, IN, Dennis Montgomery of Williamsburg, KY, Carson (Matilda) Montgomery of Salyersville, KY and Robert (Patricia) Montgomery of Inez, KY; three daughters, Anna Marie (Ed) Crowder of Beavercreek, OH, Beth (Paul) Carnes of Sidney, OH and Ella Sullivan of Kettering, OH; two brothers, Eldon “Penn” Montgomery and Ellis Montgomery, both of Salyersville, KY; four sisters, Lena Montgomery of Salyersville, KY, Genois Williams of Frenchburg, KY, Hazel Wages of Rushell, OH and Reva Fuggett of Gage, KY; thirty grandchildren and fourty-eight great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, her husband, Millard Montgomery; one daughter, Betty Arnett; six brothers, Melvin, Ollie, Moses, Lick, Pat and Chester Montgomery; three sisters, Arizona, Hattie and Mattie Montgomery preceded Blanch in death.
Funeral Services were conducted March 6, 2010 from the Salyersville Funeral Home with Clergy Leonard Blanton officiating. Burial followed in the Montgomery & Back Cemetery in Middle Fork in Salyersville, KY.

Willie “Bill” Tackett, age 85, a resident of Salyersville, KY passed away February 28, 2010 at his residence.
Willie was born July 25, 1924 in Magoffin County, KY, the son of the late Lonnie Tackett and Stella Cantrell Tackett.
Survivors include four brothers; Walter D. Tackett of Salyersville, KY, Oliver Tackett of Paden City, WV, Elmer Tackett of Denillion, FL and Billy Tackett of Carlisle, OH; one sister, Letha (Sis) Tackett Conley of Salyersville, KY; Pall Bearers, Chuck Tackett, Calvin Johnson, Johnny Johnson, Randall Conley, Billy Gene Howard and Chuck Owens.
In addition to his parents, his wife, Theda Grace May Tackett; five brothers, Lenzie Tackett, Arthur Tackett, Dennie Tackett, Charles Tackett and James Henry Tackett; one sister, Emma Johnson preceded Willie in death.
Funeral Services were conducted March 3, 2010 from the Magoffin County Funeral Home Chapel with Floyd Arnett and Wayne Meade JR officiating. Burial followed in the Hale Cemetery at Mine Fork, KY.

Frank Reed, age 81, a resident of Middletown, OH, formally of Magoffin County, KY passed away February 25, 2010 in Middletown, OH.
Frank was born May 7, 1928 in Pike County, OH, the son of the late Joe Reed and Jenny Reed.
Survivors include his wife, Marty Reed; one son, Michael (Sheila) Reed; two step-sons, Tony (Sharon) Shoemaker, Doug Shoemaker: one daughter, Debbie (Joe) Bogan, one step daughter, Diana Herman; one brother, Joe Reed; three to eight step grandchildren and one to four step great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, one step son, Mike Shoemaker; three brothers, Harkless Reed, John Reed and Buell Reed; two sisters, Marybell Gullett and Martha Helton and one grandchild preceded Frank in death.
Funeral Services were conducted March 1, 2010 from the Licking Valley United Baptist Church at Ben Branch, KY. Burial followed at the Reed Family Cemetery at Pricey Creek, KY.

Wayne Carty, age 54, a resident of Route 460 in Means, KY passed away February 12, 2010 at the St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead, KY.
Wayne was born December 23, 1955 in Salyersville, KY, the son of the late Chester and Helen Carpenter Carty.
Survivors include one son, Eric Carty of Salyersville, KY; eight brothers, Charles Carty of Frenchburg, KY, Dona C. Carty of Columbus, GA, Gus Carty of Means, KY, JD Carty of Frenchburg, KY, Lester Donald Carty of Clay City, KY, Adrian Carty of Paris, KY, James Carty of Means, KY and Darrel Ray Carty of Ohio; three sisters, Anna Mae Yarber of Means, KY, Ilene Carty of Salyersville, KY and Maxine Carty of Means, KY; one grandson, Gunner Carty.
In addition to his parents; one brother, Dealis Arnett and one sister, Imogene Carty preceded Wayne in death.
Funeral Services were conducted February 15, 2010 from the Salyersville Funeral Home Chapel with Clergy James Trimble officiating. Burial followed in the Silas Montgomery Cemetery on Craft Creek in Salyersville, KY.

Edward “Sunshine” Gilpin, age 60, a resident of Long Creek in Royalton, KY passed away February 11, 2010 at the Kings Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, KY.
Edward “Sunshine” was born June 3, 1949 in Prestonsburg, KY, the son of the late Howard and Ruby Gilpin Laney.
Survivors include his wife, Kimberlea Gilpin of Salyersville, KY; one brother, Pete Laney of Michigan; two sisters, Hazel Wireman of Royalton, KY and Erretta “Sissy” Joseph Laney of Royalton, KY.
Funeral Services were conducted February 15, 2010 from the Church of the Eternal God with clergy Rob Shepherd officiating. Burial followed in the Laney & Gilpin Cemetery on Long Branch in Royalton, KY.

Charles Edward Prater, age 81, a resident of Salyersville, KY passed away February 5, 2010 at his residence.
Charles was born April 11, 1928 in Magoffin County, the son of the late Jim Prater and LulaFitch Prater.
Survivors include his wife, Emogene Manns Prater of Salyersville, KY; one son, Todd (Debbie) Poe of Salyersville, KY; three daughters, Phillis Prater of Jackson, MI, Brenda (Ray) Cole also of Jackson, MI, Carol (Bill) Miller of Salyersville, KY; special niece, Connie DeHavens of Jackson, MI; two brother, Willie (Geraldine) Prater of Star City, IN and Lacy (Virginia) Prater of Salyersville, KY; three sisters, Nora Fullerton of Jackson, MI, Dorothy (Tim) Hill of Laporte, IN and Norma Sue (Dan) Shroads of Union City, TN; nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, three brothers, James Kelly Prater, Burl C. Prater and Kernie Prater; six sisters, Elizabeth Elliot, Sally Collins, Corrine DeHaven, Julie Wright, Mollie Underhill and Linda Bailey.

Pat Montgomery, age 68, a resident of Salyersville, KY passed away February 4, 2010 at the Saint Joseph Medical Center in Lexington, KY.
Pat was born June 22, 1941 in Breathitt County, the son of the late John Rile Montgomery and Martha Caldwell Montgomery.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Clayton Montgomery of Salyersville, KY; six daughters, Joy (Ronnie) Caldwell of Salyersville, KY, Lisa (Dan) Caldwell of Salyersville, KY, Tasha Campbell of Salyersville, KY, Sonya Huff of Noble, IN, Renee(Marvin) Edwards of Salyersville, KY and Brandie Montgomery of Salyersville, KY; three sons, Jacob “Jake” (Christie) Montgomery of Salyersville, KY, Scottie Montgomery of Columbus, OH and Cody Simpkins of Salyersville, KY; two brothers, Eldon “Pen” Montgomery and Ellis Montgomery; five sisters, Alice Montgomery, Lena Montgomery, Hazel Wages, Blanche Montgomery and Reva Fuggate; twelve grandchildren, Patrick Russell Caldwell, Brandon Shane Caldwell, Marilyn Jane Montgomery, Perry Daniel Caldwell, Emily Porter, Evan Campbell, Abby Campbell, Adam Campbell, Wyatt Howington, Ethan Edwards, Hunter Edwards and Chelsea Huff.
In addition to his parents; five brothers, Melvin, Ollie, Moses, Lick and Chester Montgomery; three sisters, Arizona, Hattie and Mattie Montgomery and two infants preceded Pat in death.
Funeral Services were conducted February 7, 2010 from the Salyersville Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Big Pat Montgomery Cemetery on Montgomery Road off of Paddle Creek in Salyersville, KY.

Janice Robbins Arnett, age 57, a resident of Salyersville, KY passed away February 12, 2010 at the Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Janice was born July 23, 1952 in Morgan County, the daughter of Millard Robbins and Nannie Daniels Robbins.
Survivors include her parents, Millard and Nannie Daniels Robbins; her husband, David Daniel Arnett of Salyersville, KY; two daughters, Sonia (Rodney) Hall and Misty (Scotty) Salyer, all of Salyersville, KY; four brothers, Jim Robbins of Stanton, KY, Paul Robbins of Salyersville, KY, John Warnie Robbins and George Robbins, both of West Liberty, KY; three sisters, Phyllis Howard, Betty Stacy and Louise Goodpastor, all of West Liberty, KY; four grandchildren, Trempas Hall, Santana Hall, Brooklyn Salyer and Brianna Salyer.
Funeral Services were conducted February 14, 2010 from the Magoffin County Funeral Home Chapel with Justin Williams and Floyd Arnett officiating. Burial followed in the Earl May Cemetery in Salyersville, KY.
