SALYERSVILLE – The Salyersville City Council met in regular session on Monday, July 17.
The council approved a resolution authorizing Mayor Stanley Howard to sign documents pertaining to the submittal of applications for the Salyersville Wastewater System Improvements, including seven lift stations, 14 manholes, and replacing approximately 1,000 feet of sewer line in downtown Salyersville.
They also approved to award the contract to design the project to Summit Architects and Engineers to provide contract administration for the Salyersville Wastewater System Improvements, and to approve moving forward with the project pending receiving the funding. The project cost is estimated at $2.1 million.
The council approved to open a checking account for the Parkway Beautification Project with Salyersville National Bank.
They also discussed buying an excavator, mainly for use by Salyersville Water Works, approving the purchase of one of the options presented, with Councilman Paul Montgomery emphasizing that they follow the service recommendations regarding maintenance and who operates the piece of equipment.
City Attorney Jeff Lovely, upon questioning from the public regarding Short Street and Broadway and whether they are closed or not, told the public he can’t find any records that the streets in question were ever closed, so they consider the roads to be city streets. He said he will ask the League of Cities what the council’s responsibilities are regarding the roads. One of the roads reportedly has a gate on it at this time placed by one of the property owners, but the city is waiting for confirmation from the League of Cities before deciding their next steps.
Another community member recommended that the city start taking up donations now to cover the cost of gifts for children to be given out after the Christmas Parade. The mayor said they will get in contact with the Hometown Christmas committee to get the ball rolling.
Council members also discussed the discrepancies of gas prices from Magoffin to surrounding counties, asking if anything can be done or if local gas distributors could come to the council and explain the gas prices.
The next regularly scheduled Salyersville City Council meeting is tentatively slated for Monday, August 21 at 7 p.m.
