Gathel Salyer (née Howard) passed away June 6th 2024 at 8:05 a.m. in her home at Frankfort, Kentucky. Gathel was born July 18th 1940 to the late Kinner and Maude Howard (née Allen) of Craft Creek, Salyersville, Kentucky. Gathel graduated from Salyersville High School, class of 1959. Following Ashland Business College she worked for Williams Wholesale Grocery Company, first as a secretary and then as a bookkeeper. She was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church in Vincent, Ohio, and lived in southeast Ohio from May 1970 until she moved to Frankfort, Kentucky in September 2014.
She was married to Earl D. Salyer on July 6th 1968, after the latter’s two enlistments in the U.S. military and naval forces. Her beloved Earl preceded her in death Febuary 7th 2011. Gathel was also preceded in death by her sisters Juanita Howard (infant) and Minerva Lovely of Salyersville, Kentucky, as well as by her brothers D.H. Howard of Lexington, Kentucky and Willard Howard of Stockbridge, Michigan.
To Earl and Gathel were born two sons by whom she is survived: Robert Earl Salyer (Hilary, née Ferguson) of Lexington, Kentucky and Jerry D. Salyer (Mariya, née Chernyavskaya) of Frankfort, Kentucky. Also surviving Gathel are nine Salyer grandchildren: R(obert) Roland, Duncan Michael, and Nathan Stuart, along with Sofia Mariya, Elizabeth Magdalina, Samuel D., Natalia Gathel, Hargis Aleksandr, and Helena Vera. Gathel is also survived by sisters Teddy Lynn Jackson of Salyersville, Kentucky, Rosamond Lovely of Chelsea, Michigan, and sister-in-law Annabel Howard of Stockbridge, Michigan, as well as by many cherished nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 10th at Magoffin County Funeral Home, with burial in the Kinner and Maude Allen Howard Cemetery, Craft Creek, Salyersville, Kentucky.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Magoffin County Funeral Home.
