Bus wreck on Rt. 7

ROYALTON – At least one person was injured in a pickup truck vs. school bus wreck on KY Rt. 7 Wednesday morning, the first day of summer school in the county.

Magoffin County Sheriff Department Chief Tim Clark told Mortimer Media, “We received a call of a school bus and another motor vehicle being involved in a collision on Route 7, up around Royalton, somewhere in the ballpark of a little after 8 o’clock this morning. When I arrived on the scene, there was a white Chevy pickup truck that had impacted the front of the school bus. From what the investigation shows, it appears the white pickup truck was coming northbound on 7 and got into that curve and couldn’t negotiate the curve and went into the school bus, which was approaching from the other side.”

The occupants of the school bus didn’t go to the hospital, but Clark said all three occupants of the pickup truck were transported to the hospital, one by a personal vehicle, one by ambulance and one was flown to a hospital out of state to be treated for injuries.

Magoffin County Schools Superintendent Chris Meadows told Mortimer Media Group Wednesday, May 29 was the first day of summer school and the district does provide transportation.

“Today was our first day of summer school and we’re running summer school for five days, so it will run through Tuesday, June 4,” Meadows said. “This morning the bus involved in the accident was transporting one student up Rt. 7 to South Magoffin Elementary. At this time, after speaking with Tim Clark, who was the investigating officer from the sheriff’s office, it appears that the truck veered across the center line in Royalton and hit the bus just as it was getting ready to go around the curve. Both student and the driver were checked by emergency personnel at the scene and were both released at the scene. We’re not aware of any injuries and the student was happy to go on to summer school, so we made sure the student made it on to South Magoffin for the day.”

Meadows said it is his understanding that the three occupants of the truck were recent Magoffin County High School graduates.

“Once they’re our kids, they’re always our kids, so we just hope everything works out for them,” Meadows said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families during this stressful time and we’re just all hoping and praying for full and complete recoveries.”
