Car overturns on the Parkway

SALYERSVILLE – Emergency crews were called to a single-vehicle wreck on the Mountain Parkway on Tuesday, June 3, with calls to 911 reporting a vehicle in its top and on fire.

Salyersville Fire Department, Magoffin County Rescue Squad and the Magoffin County Sheriff Department, as well as others, responded quickly, finding the overturned vehicle just off of the eastbound lane of the Mountain Parkway near the 68-mile-marker.

Officials believe the report of the vehicle being on fire stemmed from fluids leaking onto hot surfaces smoking and the deployment of the air bags, but the Salyersville Fire Department found no fire at the scene of the wreck.

The SUV was apparently was traveling east on the Parkway, dropped off the shoulder in the construction zone near the Johnson Fork exit, lost control, slid and hit the rock hillside head-on, with the vehicle sustaining extensive damage.

EMS crews said the driver was responsive and alert the entire time, even while they had to extricate her by removing a portion of the vehicle. She was taken by ground ambulance to an area hospital.

Sheriff Bill Meade tells Mortimer Media Group he is looking into the crash to see if speed may have been a factor. Being in the construction zone, the speed limit is posted as 45 MPH in that area.
