SALYERSVILLE – A local city council member is helping to collect donations for the people of North Carolina devastated by the recent flooding.

Salyersville City Councilman Paul Montgomery announced on Tuesday this week that he and Clyde Reed, from Floyd County, are taking up much-needed items for the people affected by the flooding that hit North Carolina as a result of Hurricane Helene last week.

Items can be dropped off at the Salyersville Fire Department downtown anytime and they plan to deliver the donations early next week.

Items requested:
Baby wipes
Formula
Diapers
Bug spray
Sunscreen
Plastic utensils
Manual can openers
Cleaning supplies
5-gallon buckets
Trash bags big ones
Toiletries
Hand sanitizer
Feminine hygiene products
Rubber gloves
Flashlights with batteries
Canned food
Bottled water

Currently, the death toll from Hurricane Helene is at more than 175 people, as of Wednesday, making it the deadliest hurricane to strike the mainland US since Katrina. At one point, all western North Carolina roads were closed due to devastating flooding that was occurring at the time.
