Fatal wreck on the Parkway

CAMPTON – A Magoffin County woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash on the Mountain Parkway in Wolfe County on Tuesday, with a Johnson County woman also killed and four others sent to the hospital.

According to Kentucky State Police Post 8, police received a call from Wolfe County Dispatch at approximately 3:50 p.m. on October 7, asking for assistance with a fatal collision on the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway near the 47-mile marker.

Police say that the preliminary investigation indicates that Robby Burchett, 58, of Flat Gap, was traveling East on the Mountain Parkway in his Town and Country minivan when he crossed the centerline into the path of a Hyundai Elantra, operated by Russell Sowers, 32, of Summerfield, Florida.

Mr. Burchett was taken to the St. Claire Regional Medical Center and treated for minor injuries, however, his passenger, Robbin Burchett, 56, of Paintsville, was pronounced deceased at the scene by Wolfe County Coroner Frank Porter.

Russell Sowers and two children passengers were taken to the Morgan County ARH in West Liberty. Sowers sustained serious injuries and police reported he is currently listed in critical condition. The youngest child, a two-year-old toddler, sustained minor injuries and is listed as stable. The 9-year-old female sustained serious injuries and is currently listed in critical condition.

Sower’s other passenger, Katelyn Harmon, 27, of Salyersville, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Harmon’s funeral arrangements are incomplete at press time, but she is remembered as a proud mother of seven and worked as a certified nursing assistant. Her sister is accepting donations for the family’s numerous expenses during this time via Cash App $Chrisgreen1123 and PayPal KellyGreen876.

KSP was assisted on scene by Wolfe County Sheriff’s Department, Cross Medical EMS, Wolfe county Fire Department, Hazel Green Fire Department, Wolfe County Coroner’s Office and other KSP personnel. The collision remains under investigation and is being reconstructed by Trooper Jordan Barnett.
