MAGOFFIN COUNTY – It was a busy few days for local fire departments, responding to multiple fires within three days.
On Monday, May 5, Morgan County dispatch requested mutual aid from Magoffin County fire departments for a garage/shed fire that was near other buildings. The North Magoffin Fire Department responded to the Morgan County fire, with a tanker, engine, and seven firefighters, and District 3 Volunteer Fire Department also responded.
Then, on Tuesday, May 6, North Magoffin Fire Department, Salyersville Fire Department and Bloomington Fire Department, was dispatched to a residential fire on Brushy Fork/Lick Creek.
When SFD arrived at the home, a bedroom and the living room was on fire, but fire crews were able to extinguish the fire with limited damage to the home.
Fire crews tell Mortimer Media Group the home was a Hamilton residence, with a husband, wife and two teenage children. The family was getting ready for bed, with some family members already in the bed. The home’s breaker box was in the bedroom of one of the teenagers, who alerted the rest of the family to the fire. Everyone was able to get out of the home safely and Salyersville Fire Department contacted the American Red Cross to find the family a place to stay for the night.
The home then caught on fire, again, on Wednesday morning, and the rekindled fire engulfed the entire home, with crews unable to save the home that time. Limited personal effects were retrieved and the family lost some pets in the second fire.
