Fiscal court meets

SALYERSVILLE – The Magoffin County Fiscal Court met in regular session on Tuesday, June 17, discussing the new playground, the pool and other ongoing projects.

The court approved the following fund transfers from the general fund: $50,000 to the jail and $10,000 to the LGEA fund.

Under departmental reports, Magoffin County Deputy Judge Kevin Howard updated the court on ongoing projects. He noted that at Ramey Memorial Park they are close to completing the new playground parking lot and driveway, but they have to wait a couple weeks to blacktop it to allow it time for it to dry out more. Judge/Executive Matthew Wireman said they will schedule a grand opening for the new playground after the blacktop and signage is added.

He also said they’ve installed a privacy fence for the playground, which was then damaged by wind, but has now been reset and repaired. He said they are also adding a 4-foot vinyl-coated black chain-link fence to surround the playground area for safety of children more prone to elopement.

Howard said the pool is now open (see page A3 for days and times) and they’re troubleshooting any issues there, but lifeguards and concessions are doing well.

At the community center, he said a lot of progress is being made with the addition for the TEK Center there, with the electric completed, windows and doors all in and most of the sheetrock is completed, Howard said. He’s ordered more vinyl siding, which will be in within the next week, and they will be able to complete the project.

At Battlefield Park, the new shelter has electricity and lights now, and it’s available to be reserved. Howard said all they have left to is to add water to the site and it will be completed.

Howard said they have resurfaced nine roads and patched a few areas as they wind down for the current fiscal year.

Judge Wireman said the county priority projects will have a new application process, and they are working on that process, but noted that the allotment goes by population, so it unfortunately has dropped.

Judge Wireman said they are working to get caught up on the mowing along county roadways, but the weather hasn’t cooperated the best. He said the opening of the pool is going well and they hope the money brought in this season will help that program break even, at least, but they have a lot of kids already utilizing the pool and many pool parties already booked.

He said there will be a horse show for the Coats for Kids Program this Saturday, June 21. The City and the Renaissance will be facilitating the majority of the Fourth of July events, but the county contributes to the fireworks and the full schedule will be in next week’s SI.

The next regularly scheduled Magoffin County Fiscal Court meeting is set for Tuesday, July 15 at 6 p.m.
