SALYERSVILLE – Make no mistake – 2025 has been a tough year and the extended government shutdown and gaps in SNAP benefits have understandably put many local families in a bind, but several groups are working to bridge those gaps and make sure everyone gets a Thanksgiving meal this year.
Lighthouse Shelter and St. Luke Catholic Church
The Lighthouse Homeless Shelter Group and St. Luke Catholic Church are sponsoring a free Thanksgiving Dinner at St. Luke today, on Thursday, November 20, with meals starting to be served at 11 a.m. Volunteers can arrive starting at 9 a.m.
While the event is focused on feeding anyone who needs a free meal, St. Luke emphasized all are welcome to the event.
Miss Magoffin County
As the SI covered earlier this month, the Miss Magoffin County Scholarship Organization paired up with the Magoffin County Schools and Salyersville First Baptist Church for a food drive, with a food drive pickup scheduled for this Saturday, November 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Salyersville First Baptist Church. If they accumulate enough food, they will extend that to Sunday, November 23 from 2 to 5 p.m.
Donations are still being taken at all Magoffin County Schools, the Magoffin County Board of Education, and Salyersville First Baptist Church through Friday, November 21, and anyone wanting to help pack the boxes can contact Miss Magoffin County Erin Grace Rudd, Miss Teen Magoffin County Lyndsey Wireman, or former Miss Magoffin County Brooklyn Faith Poe, or by calling 606-362-4130 for more information.
Magoffin County Girl Scouts
The Magoffin County Girl Scouts have partnered with other organizations and local churches to provide 600 hot prepared meals to families in need, to be handed out in a drive-thru event on Saturday, November 22 at the Salyersville Masonic Lodge, starting at 1 p.m. and running until all meals are given out.
The Girl Scouts do encourage people to contact Helen Blanton at 606-264-2569, Makenzie Bentley at 606-496-6412, or Nakkita Arnett at 606-367-7757 to pre-register for meals.
Community Thanksgiving Dinner
A free community Thanksgiving Dinner will be held at Salyersville Amenities at 44 N. Church St. in Salyersville on Saturday, November 22, starting at 12 p.m. and running until food runs out. The dinner is a sit down and delivery event, so if you have no way to make it and need a hot meal, reach out to Leigh Ann Gamble at 606-496-7518 or Katrina Bailey at 606-496-6399. Leigh Ann shared the event on Facebook with the following:
Community Thanksgiving Dinner sit down and delivery if you have no way to make it and need a hot meal reach out for your delivery we will serve until we run out!!
If God puts it on your heart and you want to help in anyway whether it be a dessert or rolls or even paper plates just reach out. The more we have, the more we can feed. I want to express great gratitude towards the Churches and individuals who have already donated to help make this happen.
Matthew 14: 16-21
16 But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.
17 And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.
18 He said, Bring them hither to me.
19 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
20 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.
21 And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.
