Gas station owners invited to city council meeting

SALYERSVILLE – While we all know that gas prices in Salyersville are notoriously higher than surrounding counties most of the time, we generally don’t know why, but an upcoming Salyersville City Council meeting may shed light on the topic.

Letters from Salyersville Mayor Stanley Howard have been sent out to the owners of Speedway, VIP Fuels and Speedy’s (Shell), inviting them to the next regular city council meeting, to be held on Monday, August 19, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. in the Salyersville City Hall meeting room.

In a recent meeting, Councilman Paul Montgomery asked City Attorney Jeff Lovely if there was anything they could do about the seemingly constant gas prices discrepancy, who said he could draft a letter inviting the gas station owners to a meeting where they could answer questions and tell their side of the story.

Important to note, the letter is just that – an invitation. Legally, the gas stations are not required to send a representative to the meeting.

Within the invitation, the letter reads as follows: “The Council is making this request because of concerns the citizens of Salyersville have raised about gas prices within the city limits. Specifically, why the gas prices seem to be sinfully higher in the City of Salyersville than in surrounding counties. This will allow you the opportunity to explain to the Council and the citizens of Salyersville how gas prices are determined.”

As of press time, gas in downtown Salyersville is $3.69, and on Restaurant Row it is $3.49, while gas is $3.25 at Middle Creek (on KY 114 between Salyersville and Prestonsburg), $3.39 in Paintsville, and $3.35 in Prestonsburg and Pikeville.

The SI continues to monitor the gas prices, with prices shown at the bottom of the front page each week.
