SALYERSVILLE – On Friday, January 16 Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear appointed Donald Wayne McFarland to fill the unexpired term of Magoffin County Judge/Executive, which will run through the end of the year.
At the end of last month, now-former Magoffin County Judge/Executive Matthew Wireman announced he would be resigning one year shy of completing his second term. The remaining three magistrates met and appointed Darrell Ray Howard, the magistrate for District 1 and the longest-sitting magistrate on the fiscal court, as the temporary judge/executive, while the governor had 30 days to appoint an interim judge/executive to fill the last year of the four-year term.
On January 16, after receiving letters of recommendation from Magoffin County Court Clerk Renee Shepherd and Matthew Wireman, Governor Beshear officially appointed McFarland to the office.
Interim Judge/Executive Donald Wayne McFarland is a local attorney, and holds the position of Democratic Party chairman for Magoffin County.
Important to note, Wireman chose to resign from the office when he did in order to comply with state retirement laws and to protect his pension eligibility, while also maintaining the ability to seek reelection. He will be on the ballot this coming November.
