Johnson Fork hunting cabin vandalized, items stolen

Terry Cobern

SALYERSVILLE – A Salyersville man was arrested on Sunday on a warrant charging him with burglary.

According to the arrest citation, Terry J. Cobern, 47, of Jack Adams Subdivision, in Salyersville, was picked up on Elk Creek on Sunday, May 11, for an outstanding warrant against him, issued earlier this month.

According to the warrant, issued on May 5, Magoffin County Sheriff Department Deputy Eugene Salyer received a report that on April 25, 2025, a cabin located on the Left Fork of Left-Hand Johnson Fork was reportedly burglarized by two men breaking into the back door of the cabin, vandalizing the cabin and taking the following items: a three-person hunting blind, tripod base to a swivel hunting chair, 10 Coleman propane canisters, a vintage coal oil lantern, three coal oil lanterns, an electric coffee pot, a vintage straight razor, two knives, two first aid kits, one can of OFF tick spray, assorted cans of food, assorted no-scent sprays, discs, Hot Hands, pillows and blankets and tore a rug that was hanging on the wall in the process. The total estimated value of the items stolen is $1,452, according to the warrant.

The owners of the cabin had “no trespassing” signs posted and had active trail cameras, which showed the victim and another man on the property and a red truck with some of the stolen items in the back of the truck, according to the warrant.

Reportedly, police were able to identify one of the men in the trail camera footage as being Cobern.

Terry J. Cobern is facing the charge of second-degree burglary (a felony). Cobern was taken to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, where he remains at press time, with a preliminary hearing in the case set for May 19 at the Magoffin County Justice Center.
