PAINTSVILLE – A Magoffin County man was arrested in Johnson County Monday night for an alleged attempted carjacking.
According to the arrest citation, Paintsville dispatch received a report of a male individual attempting to enter a vehicle on a male in Second Street in Paintsville. The caller reported seeing the man flee from Second Street towards Ramada Inn, and provided a description of his clothing.
Police were able to track down a man matching the caller’s description in front of the Ramada, with the man identified as Tracy Coffey, 52, of New Paintsville Road, in Salyersville.
According to the police report, Coffey allegedly told police he had been baptized recently and claimed “the Lord had placed it on his heart to take the vehicle.”
Coffey also admitted to police he had smoked marijuana earlier that day, according to the citation.
The victim was brought to the scene and positively identified Coffey as the person that had attempted to enter his vehicle.
Coffey was placed under arrest and taken to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, and released two days later on a $500 surety bond. Coffey is currently facing the charges of carjacking, public intoxication – controlled substance (excludes alcohol), second-degree disorderly conduct, and menacing.
