MAGOFFIN COUNTY – The Salyersville Independent has received numerous complaints about mailboxes being damaged throughout the county, which was also confirmed by Magoffin County Sheriff Bill Meade.
If you or someone you know has caught these acts on surveillance video, contact the sheriff’s office at 606-349-2914, or talk to your postmaster.
Sheriff Meade also asked Mortimer Media Group to remind the public that tampering with a mailbox is a federal offense. According to the United States Postal Inspection Service, mailboxes are protected by federal law and crimes against mailboxes (and the mail inside) are investigated by Postal Inspectors. Those who are convicted of destruction of federal property could spend up to three years in jail and be fined up to $250,000.
