Man arrested for terroristic threatening at local grocery store

SALYERSVILLE – Police intervened a reported verbal assault and terroristic threatening at the entrance of a local grocery store on Sunday evening.

On February 9, Magoffin County Sheriff Department Deputy N. Watson was dispatched to a terroristic threatening call involving a mother and her son at the parking lot of The Market (formerly IGA).

When police arrived, a man and his wife met Deputy Watson at the doorway of the store, stating they had witnessed the verbal assault and threats being made to the victim, according to the arrest citation.

The victim was also in the entryway and told police she was afraid to return to her vehicle and the witnesses told police they would not leave her due to the threats they heard her son say to her, according to the police report.

The witnesses reported hearing the man threaten to kill his mother, to rip the gearshift out of the vehicle, and to throw her things out the house once they get to the house, according to the arrest citation.

Darin Gullett, 49, of Salyersville, was taken into custody and charged with alcohol intoxication in a public place, third or greater offense in 12 months, and second-degree terroristic threatening.

The victim requested an Emergency Protective Order (EPO) due to the fact she was afraid her son was really going to hurt or kill her, telling police she was at her “wits’ end” and her son needs help, stating, “he must stop drinking.”

Gullett was taken to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, where he remains at press time. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for February 17, at 9:15 a.m. at the Magoffin County Justice Center.
