McDowell man charged with drug trafficking

SALYERSVILLE – A McDowell man was arrested on drug trafficking charges on Monday night after the local K-9 officer made a positive alert on a car that had been traveling on KY Rt. 114, with his passenger also apprehended since he was wanted on warrants out of Pike and Floyd counties.

Magoffin County Sheriff Department Deputy N. Watson pulled over a vehicle that was reportedly speeding and driving in the center of two lanes on September 30, with the driver not being cooperative, stating he didn’t know the passenger and had picked him up in McDowell, also telling police he was on his way to play power on Rt. 134, but could not give law enforcement the name of the residence.

The passenger also gave police a false name and social security number.

Deputy D. Watson and the K-9 unit were asked to do a free air sniff, with the K-9 officer giving a positive alert on the passenger side door and fender area.

After searching the pickup truck, police found prescription bottles for gabapentin 600mg, quantity 120; oxycodone 15mg, quantity 120; and oxymorphone 15mg, quantity 60, all of which had been filled on September 23 and were all empty. Police also found a magnetic lock box with white residue, located underneath the hood behind the battery, and a pack of fentanyl test strips located in the glove box, according to the arrest citation.

The driver had $1,622 in his right front picket, which was also confiscated.

Police contacted the Floyd County deputy sheriff, who positively identified the passenger as being someone wanted out of Floyd County.

The driver, identified as James D. Alley, 64, of McDowell, was charged with speeding 19 MPH over the limit; failure of owner to maintain required ins/sec, first offense; failure to produce insurance card; reckless driving; prescription controlled substance not proper container, first offense; trafficking in a controlled substance, first degree, first offense (less than 10 D.U. opiates); trafficking in a controlled substance, first degree, first offense (greater than or equal to 10 D.U. drug unspecified).

The passenger, Donnie Robinette, 47, of Salyersville, was wanted on multiple probation violations out of Floyd County, on an indictment warrant from Pike County on theft by unlawful taking ($10,000 < $1,000,000) and persistent felony offender charges, as well as charged with obstructions/interference with an officer, and giving officer false identifying information.

At press time, both men remain at the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, awaiting court proceedings.
