Melody Salyer

Melody Salyer, 65 of Berea Ky, and the beloved wife for 49 years of Terry L. Salyer, departed her earthly home surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday July 12, 2023. She was born Melody Ann Marshall on September 24, 1957, in Paintsville KY, to Astor and Phyllis Patrick Marshall.

Melody’s childhood was spent at the head of Puncheon Creek in the community of Gypsy, near Royalton in Magoffin County Kentucky. This is also where her career began with the U.S. Postal Service. In 1981, Melody became her mother’s successor as Postmaster at Gypsy, a position that subsequent family had held before her beginning with her grandmother in the 1920s. Throughout her profession, Melody served as Postmaster or Officer in Charge at several local offices including Van Cleve, Livingston, Mount Vernon, and McKee.

In May of 2017, she along with five others from across the country were recognized at the National Postal Forum in Baltimore, Maryland, for her achievements within the Postal Service. After almost 40 years being a civil service employee, Melody decided to retire and spend her days devoted to being a grandmother. This allotted more time for her to spend with her husband, the love of her life, while making more memories with her son and daughter-in-law. Melody enjoyed watching Brant and Megan fulfill their roles as parents and admired the ways that they were bringing up her grandchildren, and this made her very proud. She also got the opportunity to make lasting memories with family and friends.

She is survived by her mother, Phyllis Marshall of Salyersville, Ky; her husband, Terry Salyer of Berea, Ky; her son, Terry Brant Salyer and his wife Megan along with their children, Grandson Benjamin Lee and Granddaughter Emelia Marie of Richmond, Ky; her sisters Linda (Dutch) Daisy of LaPorte, IN, Bonnie (Lester) Pucket of Salyersville, Ky and Donna (Carl) Wireman of Royalton, Ky; as well as her caregiver during her illness, niece, Dana Millen of Lexington, Ky; and best friend
of 30 plus years, Marquita Van Winkle along with a host of nieces, nephews and other family and friends who are left to mourn.

She is preceded in death by her father, Astor Marshall; infant sister, Carol Sue Marshall; her brother, Danny Leon Marshall and two nieces, Jan Monique Marshall, and Andrea Rhea Mensch.
Melody provided invaluable mentorship, friendship, comedy, storytelling, joy, and unwavering commitment and love to family and friends. Those who love her will always cherish the memories and the time that was spent with her throughout her life-journey. Melody was an inspiration to all those who had the privilege of knowing her, and she will be deeply missed.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
