SALYERSVILLE – Five were arrested at a Salyersville home last Thursday after police reportedly found large quantities of fentanyl and other drug paraphernalia in the home.

According to the arrest citations, Magoffin County Sheriff Department Deputy Tyler Lafferty was on patrol the night of February 20 when he received a complaint regarding a male and female subject, possibly with outstanding warrants, located at a home on Patrick Drive in Salyersville.

Deputy Lafferty reportedly went to the home, and made contact with a female at the front door of an apartment situated above a two-car garage. According to the police report, she opened the door, at which time Deputy Lafferty observed several syringes on the counter, along with individual baggies containing an unknown residue. He also saw a male, later identified as Steven Davis, seated in a brown recliner and appearing to be concealing items in the side of the chair.

Police entered the residence and instructed Davis to show his hands, noting that a silver container holding approximately 33 grams of a substance believed to be fentanyl and a set of digital scales were located directly in front of Davis, according to the report.

During a search of the residence, police reported finding: hundreds of syringes scattered throughout multiple rooms; two individual baggies, weighing approximately 10 grams and containing a substance consistent with fentanyl located under the left couch cushion in the front room; multiple digital scales throughout the apartment; a silver spoon with a brown substance on the kitchen table, along with additional syringes and scales; approximately $3,000 in cash throughout the apartment, and three firearms.

The matter is still under investigation by the Magoffin County Sheriff’s Office, while all individuals inside the apartment at the time of the search were taken into custody and transported to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center and charged as follows:

Steven Davis, 41, of Inez, is charged with aggravated trafficking in a controlled substance greater than or equal to 28 grams of fentanyl; buying or possessing drug paraphernalia; possession of a handgun by a convicted felon; possession of a controlled substance, first degree, first offense (drug unspecified).

Dillon Gamble, 31, of Salyersville, is charged with complicity of aggravated trafficking in a controlled substance greater than or equal to 28 grams of fentanyl; buying or possessing drug paraphernalia; and first-degree possession of a controlled substance, first offense, drug unspecified, complicity.

Anthony Patrick, 50, of Salyersville, is charged with complicity of aggravated trafficking in a controlled substance greater than or equal to 28 grams of fentanyl; buying or possessing drug paraphernalia; and first-degree possession of a controlled substance, first offense, drug unspecified, complicity.

Kimberly Compton, 39, of Salyersville, is charged with complicity of aggravated trafficking in a controlled substance greater than or equal to 28 grams of fentanyl; buying or possessing drug paraphernalia; and first-degree possession of a controlled substance, first offense, drug unspecified, complicity.

Mary Collinsworth, 47, of Salyersville, is charged with complicity of aggravated trafficking in a controlled substance greater than or equal to 28 grams of fentanyl; buying or possessing drug paraphernalia; and first-degree possession of a controlled substance, first offense, drug unspecified, complicity.

The five have preliminary hearings in their cases set for March 3 at the Magoffin County Justice Center. All five remain at the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, each being held on a $25,000 cash bond.

Magoffin County Sheriff Bill Meade said the 43 grams of fentanyl seized during the February 20 search was the largest amount his office has ever recovered at one time.

In perspective, 2 milligrams of fentanyl can be lethal, so one gram is potentially lethal for up to 500 people. The amount confiscated during this drug bust could be potentially lethal for up to 21,500 people.
