SALYERSVILLE – A now-former rescue squad member was arrested earlier this month for alleged official misconduct in addition to drug possession charges.
According to the arrest citation, on July 19, Magoffin County Sheriff Department Deputy W. Lafferty conducted a traffic stop after observing the driver without a seatbelt leaving a residence known for drug trafficking.
Deputy Lafferty noted in the police report the driver, identified as Steven D. Lackey, 46, of Salyersville, seemed very nervous and had trouble completing sentences. He gave police consent to search the vehicle, stating he didn’t have anything illegal in the car, according to the arrest citation.
During the search, police found half of a Xanax, half od a Methadone and three Hydrocodone pills, according to the police report.
On the citation, Deputy Lafferty said Lackey was a member of the Magoffin County Rescue Squad and had a hand held and mobile radios, which were seized during the investigation for official misconduct.
According to the police report. Lackey was listening to the sheriff’s office radio traffic and letting the people he purchased narcotics from know what the officers were doing and where they were, including giving information about safety check points.
Lackey was taken into custody and transported to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center and was released the next day, pending future court dates.
Lackey is facing the following charges: second-degree official misconduct, third-degree possession of a controlled substance (drug unspecified) and second-degree possession of a controlled substance (drug unspecified).
Magoffin County Rescue Squad Captain Dewey Marshall confirmed to Mortimer Media Group Lackey is no longer on the rescue squad.
