This week the community mourns the loss of former Magoffin County sheriff and longtime local business owner, Carson Ray Montgomery, who passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at the age of 68.
Montgomery served as Magoffin County sheriff for three terms, elected in 2010 and serving through his retirement in 2022. He also over time owned several businesses in Magoffin County, including a motel and gas station, trucking company and a pawn shop.
His funeral was originally slated for Monday, but inevitably was rescheduled for graveside services on Tuesday, January 16, due to the inclement weather.
Lisa Montgomery-Cheek, Montgomery’s daughter, posted on social media on Tuesday that they will plan to have a memorial ceremony later with an honorary service, provided by the Kentucky Sheriffs’ Association, at a later date, to be announced.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sheriff Montgomery’s family and friends during this difficult time. His full obituary can be found on page A4.
