Summer feeding program underway

MAGOFFIN COUNTY – The Magoffin County Schools Summer Feeding Program started this week, with some big changes from previous years.

Superintendent Chris Meadows, “This food service project for the summer is important in many ways. We think of the school year as August through May, but really, you’re serving your community year-round and we’re able to serve, not just students, but children from age 1 up through 18, so it’s a very important service project that our board at our school system is very happy to always participate in.”

Superintendent Meadows explained they are excited to offer a different model this year.

“Typically in the past we have delivered lunches daily, but this year we are delivering a couple days per week, but then students or children may receive bulk lunches and breakfast items for the off days. In doing this, we’re even able to offering it on the weekends, on Saturday and Sunday, and we’ve never done that in the past, so we’re very excited to be able to offer meal items 7 days a week during the service period.”

Food Service Coordinator Andrew Oliver explained that the program started on Monday, June 17, which was the first day kids could pick up meals covering breakfast and lunch for Tuesday and Wednesday.

“We’ll serve, again, on Thursday and students can get a hot meal, and then also take menu items home with them for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and then we’ll start back, again, next week,” Oliver said.

While mobile routes will run on serving days (Mondays and Thursdays June 17 – June 28 and July 8 – July 28), children can also come to the Magoffin County High School to pick up their meals.

The full schedule and locations are included above.
