ELK CREEK – Two were arrested Saturday night after a traffic stop led to police finding a large amount of methamphetamine.
According to the arrest citation, Magoffin County Sheriff Department Deputy W. Lafferty was on patrol on June 22 when he observed a black KIA Optima pulling out of Eddie Adams Road at a high rate of speed, leading him to activate his emergency equipment to initiate a traffic stop.
The drive of the vehicle pulled off on the right side of the road on Old Lick Creek Road.
As law enforcement made contact with the occupants of the vehicle, Deputy Lafferty noted that the driver, identified as Haley R. Barnett, 20, of Church St. in Salyersville, and the passenger, identified as Terry Daniels, 47, of Thealka, KY, both reportedly were acting extremely nervous.
When asked what they were doing up Eddie Adams Road, which the officer noted is a “high drug trafficking area,” Barnett reportedly told police they were looking for her ex-boyfriend’s residence, according to the citation.
Barnett was asked to step out of the vehicle and talk to police, at which time police read her Miranda Rights, and she told the officer her ex-boyfriend had put something under the hood of her car, but she didn’t know what it was.
Daniels was then read the Miranda Rights and asked to step out of the vehicle, as well, at which time police found a black and white bandana tucked under the hood of the car, containing approximately 60 grams of methamphetamine.
Daniels told police he didn’t know anything about the methamphetamine, but Barnett stated “he knew everything about it” and that he was the one who was supposed to be delivering it to a residence in Paintsville.
Both Daniels and Barnett were taken to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center and charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, first offense (greater than or equal to 2 grams of methamphetamine).
Daniels still remains in custody at the jail, with a preliminary hearing set for July 1 at 9:15 a.m.
Barnett was released late the next day, but no court date has been set in her case, yet.
