PAINTSVILLE — Magoffin County came up short as Paintsville prevailed 63-60 in overtime in the opening game of the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
The loss eliminated number one seed Magoffin County from the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament. The Hornets exited the 2022-23 boys’ high school basketball season 16-11.
Paintsville, which entered the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament seeded fourth, shot 81.5 percent from the foul line. The Tigers connected on 22 of 27 free throw attempts.
Paintsville managed to outrebound the Hornets 43-34.
Connor Fugate scored a game-high 31 points to lead Paintsville to the win. Fugate drained 14 of 17 free throw attempts.
Accompanying Fugate in double figures for the Tigers, Brock Woods scored 14 points.
Finishing near double figures for Paintsville, Ethan Cole netted nine points and AJ James tallied eight points.
Chipping in offensively for the Tigers, Anderson Lauffer added two points.
Magoffin County shot 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from the free throw line in the season-ending loss.
Aden Barnett scored 27 points to pace Magoffin County in the district tournament matchup. Along with Barnett reaching double figures for the Hornets, Zane Whitaker scored 15 points and Ben Lafferty netted 12 points.
Contributing offensively, Grayson Whitaker (three points), Ethan Salyer (two points) and Russell Walker (one point) accounted for Magoffin County’s additional scoring.
