Hornets overcome slow start to defeat Jaguars

PIKEVILLE — Magoffin County battled back from behind to defeat Floyd Central 78-68 in the quarterfinals of the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament at Appalachian Wireless Arena on Thursday, March 7.

After notching the win, Magoffin County advanced to the semifinals of the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament.

Floyd Central owned multiple leads, outscoring Magoffin County 19-16 in the first quarter.

The Jaguars led 38-29 at halftime but couldn’t hold off the Hornets.

Magoffin County outscored Floyd Central 49-30 in the second half to pull away for the win.

Longtime 57th District member Magoffin County shot 49.1 percent (27-of-55) from the field. The Hornets shot 41.2 percent (seven-of-17) from three-point range.

Magoffin County shot 73.9 percent (17-of-23) from the free throw line.

Aden Barnett scored 35 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead Magoffin County to the win in the opening round of the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament. Barnett led a trio of Magoffin County players in double figures.

Joining Barnett in double figures for the Hornets, Walker Russell netted 16 points and Ethan Salyer posted 12 points.

Narrowly missing double figures for Magoffin County in its win, Grayson Whitaker added nine points.

Rounding out Magoffin County’s scoring, Zane Whitaker contributed four points and Noah Sammons chipped in two points.

Braden Moore paced Floyd Central, scoring 19 points for the 58th District title winner.

Joining Moore in double figures for the Jaguars, Ronnie Samons and Brody Buck netted 17 points apiece.

Finishing in single digits. Chris Spriggs (six points), Dylan Boyd (six points) and Dawson Moore (three points) provided the rest of Floyd Central’s scoring.
