Inside 57th District Girls’ Basketball

Johnson Central is alone at the top of the 57th District girls’ basketball standings.

The number one seed for the 57th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament, Johnson Central is carrying momentum into the postseason.

Martin County and Paintsville each compiled a 3-3 57th District record during the girls’ high school basketball regular season while Magoffin County finished 0-6.

Johnson Central: Crowned the 2A, Section 8 Girls’ Basketball Champion earlier in the year, Johnson Central registered over 20 wins during the regular season.

Johnson Central thrives thanks in part to a balanced offensive attack. Karlea Stanley, Adyson Burchett and Kaylyn McKenzie each average 10 or more points for the Lady Eagles. Also, Maddie Prater, Allie Slone and Haylee Marsillett push to average double figures in scoring for Johnson Central regularly.

Additional players who contribute consistently for Johnson Central include Emma McKenzie, Emma Ferguson and Jaylin Blanton.

Magoffin County: The Lady Hornets made strides throughout the regular season. Magoffin County players have gained valuable experienced in the latest prep hoops campaign.

Near the end of the regular season, Abby Barnett, Macy Williams and Bella Trusty were each averaging double figures in scoring for the Lady Hornets. Barnett and Williams rank 1-2 for Magoffin County in both scoring and rebounding.

Additional key contributors for Magoffin County include Emily Sluss, Abigail Bradley, Jerrica Reed, Maddie Salyer and Karly Jenkins.

Starters and reserves have each been instrumental in Magoffin County’s success.

Martin County: Earlier in the season, Martin County captured the 15th Region All “A” Classic title.

Brooklyn Marcum and Maci Maynard have averaged double figures in scoring for Martin County throughout the 2024-25 girls’ high school basketball season. Maynard, who is among the top young girls’ high school players in the state, averages a double-double for the Lady Cardinals.

Chloe May is averaging near double figures in scoring in the final week of the regular season for Martin County, which finished runner-up to Johnson Central in the 2023-24 57th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament.

Along with the top three scorers, Candace Spaulding, Makenna Marcum and Sophie Harless excel for former 57th District frontrunner Martin County.

Paintsville: Heading into the final week of the regular season, Kylie Kinner was averaging a team-high 23 points and 9.5 rebounds per game for the Lady Tigers. Earlier in the regular season, Kinner reached milestones of 1,500 points and 700 rebounds.

Paintsville fared well during the final month of the regular season, defeating 57th District rival Martin County in a home game.

Emma Keeton, Brooklyn Skaggs, McKinley Ramey, Annabelle Blankenship, Eliza Howard and Addison Helton follow Kinner in Paintsville’s attack.
