SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County High School senior Gavin Arnett is headed to the next level.

Arnett signed with the University of Pikeville football program during a ceremony held at MCHS on Friday, March 13.

A proven leader, Arnett made an impact both offensively and defensively for Magoffin County throughout his high school football career.

Offensively, Arnett blocked for a Magoffin County offensive unit which thrived during the 2025 high school football season. On the ground in 2025, Magoffin County rushed 368 times for 2,061 yards and 25 touchdowns. Through the air in 2025, Magoffin County completed 57 passes for 800 yards and eight touchdowns.

In addition to excelling offensively, Arnett contributed defensively for the Hornets.

“Gavin is a goal oriented young man,” said Magoffin County Coach John DeRossett. “He is very smart and knows the direction he wants to take in life. He is a Governors Scholar and excels on the field of play as well. He is what a coach wants in a player — shows up every day, works hard and cares about his teammates. Gavin made himself into a really good lineman in the weight room. He was a leader in the weight room and would double back and help with our young guys in the after-school program. We are excited for his opportunity at UPike, both on the field and in the classroom. I am happy for him and his family. They’re an outstanding bunch of people. I appreciate them and Gavin for his hard work and dedication to our community, school and football program.”

UPike competes in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC). Head coach Corey Fipps guides the Bears.

UPike compiled a 4-6 overall record in the 2025 college football season. A successful college football program, UPike was the Co-AAC Champion in 2024. The Bears reached the second round of the 2024 NAIA Playoffs.
