Arrest made in dog shooting case

CAUDILL HOLLOW – A Magoffin man is facing charges related to cruelty to animals after allegedly shooting a dog across the road from him.

On Thursday, July 15, Garry Tillis Patrick, 38, of Mine Fork, in Salyersville, was arrested on an active warrant that had been issued in April.

According to the warrant, Magoffin County Sheriff Department Deputy Jonathan Holbrook was dispatched to Caudill Hollow on April 21 for a gunshot to a dog. Upon his arrival, Holbrook talked to the owner of the dog, who told police Patrick shot his dog in the neighbor’s yard from across the county roadway. The owner also told police the dog had permission to be on the property and was not disturbing anything on the property.

Holbrook also spoke to another neighbor who stated the gunshot came from across the road where Patrick was.
Patrick reportedly told police the dog was chasing his goat and he shot the dog.

Holbrook wrote in his report that he did not find a blood trail to where Patrick said the dog was shot, also noting that the owner stated the dog was elderly, no vicious and has never chased goats.

The arrest warrant was issued on April 24, with Patrick arrested on July 15 by MCSO J. Caudill. He was taken and released from the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, with an arraignment in the misdemeanor case slated for August 9. He is currently facing the charges of second-degree cruelty to animals and discharge of a firearm/other device across a public roadway.

Editor’s Note: The indictment or charge of a person by a grand jury or otherwise is an accusation only and that person is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Cruelty to animals is a marker of someone who would do harm to those less physically able to retaliate. This type of individual probably abuses his wife, children and even elderly people that are dependent on him.
Pay attention now Salyersville or you’ll get the opportunity to punish him again when he abuses other people.
