SALYERSVILLE — Senior guard Aden Barnett was honored as Magoffin County’s all-time leading scorer on Monday, Jan. 22.
Among the top high school student-athletes in the state, Barnett reached two milestones recently.
Barnett scored his 3,000th point, becoming only the second player in school history to do so.
Becoming the all-time leading scorer in school history, Barnett broke a record set by Leonard Carpenter 73 years ago. One of the most prolific scorers in Kentucky basketball history, Carpenter starred at Salyersville High School. At the time of his graduation, Carpenter was the first player in state history to score 3,000 points. Carpenter is a member of the Dawahares/KHSAA Hall of Fame.
A leading candidate for 15th Region Player of the Year, Barnett was averaging 27.2 points and 5.9 rebounds per game midway through the 2023-24 boys’ high school basketball season earlier in the month.
Barnett is a longtime leader for the Hornets. A three-sport athlete, Barnett also excels in football and baseball.
Barnett and his Magoffin County teammates will enter the boys’ high school basketball postseason in late-February.
