Barnett, Whitaker reunite at UPike

PIKEVILLE — Magoffin County High School graduates Aden Barnett and Zane Whitaker have reunited on the University of Pikeville men’s basketball team.

Barnett and Whitaker are each contributing for the University of Pikeville in the 2025-26 men’s college basketball season.

Both Barnett and Whitaker are former Magoffin County High School standouts. Each Magoffin County High School graduate has played in multiple games for the Bears.

Barnett is a redshirt freshman guard for perennial title contender UPike. A former 15th Region Player of the Year, Barnett is in his second season with the University of Pikeville men’s basketball program.

Whitaker is a sophomore forward for the Bears. After competing in swimming for the Bears, Whitaker is a first-year member of the University of Pikeville men’s basketball team.

Through its first 10 games in the 2025-26 men’s college basketball season, the University of Pikeville is 8-2 overall and 4-0 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. The Bears are 3-0 at home.

UPike has recorded wins over WVU Tech, Bluefield University, Columbia International University, Johnson University, Montreat College, Union Commonwealth University, Indiana University East and Life University.

Both Huntington University (Ind.) and Florida Memorial University have defeated the Bears.

Currently, UPike leads the nation in free throw shooting. The Bears are shooting 87.0 percent from the foul line. Through its first 10 games in the 2025-26 men’s college basketball season, UPike has connected on 174 of 200 free throw attempts.

UPike is scheduled to visit Spartanburg Methodist College in South Carolina for its next game in the 2025-26 men’s college basketball season on Saturday, Dec. 6.
