SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County head coach John DeRossett is closing in on his 200th career win.
DeRossett, who is in his second season as Magoffin County head coach, notched his 199th career win as the Hornets defeated visiting Powell County 50-25 in a Class 3A, District 8 game on Friday, Sept. 29.
Over his career, DeRossett has been a head coach for 28 years. In his first stint as a head coach, DeRossett spent four years guiding Betsy Layne. Then, returning to his high school alma mater, DeRossett guided Prestonsburg as its head coach for 22 years. DeRossett’s coaching stint as a head coach at Prestonsburg included a state runner-up finish.
Prior to coming to Magoffin County, DeRossett was an assistant coach at Cabell Midland (W.Va.) for one season.
In addition to Cabell Midland, DeRossett was an assistant coach on Belfry and Prestonsburg coaching staffs earlier in his career.
Possessing coaching experience on multiple levels, DeRossett was an assistant coach for the University of Pikeville football program prior to going to Cabell Midland.
Magoffin County has regular season games remaining versus Lawrence County, Estill County and Morgan County. The Hornets will meet both Lawrence County and Estill County for Class 3A, District 8 games.
DeRossett will guide the Hornets in another Class 3A, District 8 game at Lawrence County on Friday, Oct. 6.
