Engineers outlast Hornets in overtime

IRVINE — Estill County prevented Magoffin County from remaining in the win column, outlasting the Hornets 60-57 in overtime on Friday, Jan. 24.

Reigning 15th Region boys’ basketball champion Magoffin County slipped to 5-10 after suffering the loss.

Estill County, a member of the 14th Region, used a diverse offensive attack to claim the win.

Casey Chaney paced Estill County, scoring a team-high 20 points for the Engineers.

Accompanying Chaney in double figures for Estill County, Jax Niece scored 17 points and Levi Beckler netted 10 points.

Aiding Estill County offensively, Rylan Brown (five points), Preston Angel (four points), Bryce Brinegar (two points) and Ashton Rose (two points) provided the Engineers’ remaining scoring.

Chaney and Angel each excelled inside for Estill County, claiming six rebounds apiece.

Walker Russell led the Hornets. Russell recorded a game-high double-double, scoring 39 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.

Nearly recording a double-double for Magoffin County, Jackson Gilliland scored 10 points and secured nine rebounds.

Chipping in offensively, Dason Burchett (four points), Michael Trusty (two points) and Tayte Hall (two points) were Magoffin County’s additional scorers
