Fatal wreck on Parkway

MORGAN COUNTY – A Madison County man was killed in a tractor trailer vs. SUV wreck on the Mountain Parkway Monday afternoon.

At approximately 12:10 p.m., crews were dispatched to the 60-mile marker of the Mountain Parkway in Morgan County, where Morgan County Coroner Raymond Vancleave told the Licking Valley Courier (LVC) Larry E. Miller, 72, of Berea, died after his KIA SUV collided with a tractor and trailer hauling gravel.

According to the report from LVC’s Miranda Cantrell, Miller was pronounced deceased at the scene and was removed from his vehicle by members of the Morgan County Rescue Squad.

Coroner Vancleave said Miller’s body was transported to Louisville for autopsy.

According to a press release from Kentucky State Police Miller crossed the centerline, striking Larry Watson, 63 years old, of Leander, KY, who was operating a 1996 Peterbuilt tractor trailer.

The collision remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police Post 8 in Morehead, while the Morgan County Ambulance Service, Caney Valley Fire Department and the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office also responding to the collision. The Magoffin County Rescue Squad and the Kentucky Department of Transportation assisted in rerouting traffic onto KY 134.

Morgan County Sheriff Greg Motley told the LVC the roadway was shut down for several hours after the incident.

Just after 1 p.m. on Monday, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 10 posted to social media, “The Mountain Parkway in Morgan County is currently closed between MM 60-61 due to a fatality accident. Traffic is being detoured via KY 134. No timeframe for reopening has yet been established.” They posted the roadway was back open roughly five hours later.

No further details regarding the crash have been released at press time.

Miller’s funeral arrangements are under the care of Davis & Powell Funeral Home in Berea, with services set for 11 a.m. Friday, April 2, at the Liberty Avenue Baptist Church, according to the funeral home’s website.
