Flora Kay Howard Preston was born March 13, 1949 to Carl Howard and Nancy Patrick Howard. She is preceded in death by both parents, her dear sister Audie Howard Howell, her husband Russell Edwin Preston and her long time mate Gary Thomas Herald. She is survived by one sister Patricia (Randy) Vitatoe, two brothers David (Murl) Howard, and Carl Jay (Rhonda) Howard; four children Vanessa Wright, Scottie (Donna) Reed, Jeffery Reed, and Rigel (Maria) Preston; 11 grandchildren and 14 great grand children and so many others that adored her for her brutal honesty and fierce friendship. She was saved and baptized December 31, 2023 and went home to her Savior January 13, 2024.
How can you sum up a 75 year life: She was no better friend and no worse enemy. I believe anyone from Magoffin to Floyd County has a Kay Preston story whether they know it or not. It maybe something harsh, “Some lady at the restaurant threatened to stab me for asking her feller if he wanted anything else !!” Or something kind, “I was so hungry this lady at the store bought me groceries and gave me extra money for my kids.” Both of these are true stories and I’m sure each of you have something similar to tell. She taught me that honesty was always best because no matter how brutal the truth is, it was better than a lie… whether she followed her own advice is not a debate I’m having but she instilled the truth in me. For that, I am forever grateful. Her greatest joy was her Samantha, her greatest pride was her sweet Rayleigh, and this doesn’t mean she loved any of us less than them, but rather they were and remain her favorites. If you don’t like it, tough. We’re not going to mourn my mother’s passing for she has escaped this world and is walking pain free in Heaven. We are celebrating a life that has affected so many people positively. Her generosity and her compassion are traits we all should try to emulate. God bless you, Momma. I will see you again.
Funeral services for Flora Kay Howard Preston will be conducted at 12 noon Thursday, January 18, 2024 from the Lakefront Church of God with Larry Patrick officiating. Burial will follow in the Howard Family Cemetery at Middle Fork, Kentucky. Friends may visit the Lakefront Church of God anytime Thursday prior to funeral services.
