Gas outage plagues Magoffin

SALYERSVILLE – With arctic temperatures sweeping the area, the demand for natural gas has increased, unfortunately dropping the gas pressure throughout the system and creating a widespread natural gas outage affecting many customers in Magoffin County.

On Wednesday, January 22, Magoffin County Judge/Executive Matthew Wireman released the following to Magoffin County residents:

We are aware of the widespread natural gas outage affecting many of you, and we want to reassure you that we are in contact with Frontier Gas Company. They have informed us that the massive demand has led to a drop in pressures system-wide. However, they believe that as temperatures increase and demand decreases, pressures will soon rise and service will be restored.

In the meantime, we have the Lloyd M Hall Community Center open as a warming center. Please don’t hesitate to come by during this outage if you don’t have an alternative heating source. If you do have a secondary way to warm your residence’s we urge everyone to use alternative heating sources safely. Here are some guidelines to help you stay warm:

1. **Space Heaters**: Ensure your space heater has an automatic shut-off feature. Keep it away from flammable materials and never leave it unattended.

2. **Fireplaces and Wood Stoves**: Make sure they are properly ventilated. Keep a window slightly open to ensure adequate airflow and prevent carbon monoxide buildup.

3. **Layer Up**: Wear multiple layers of clothing and use extra blankets to keep warm.

4. **Stay In One Room**: Concentrate your heating efforts in a single room to conserve energy.

5. **Check on Neighbors**: If you can, check on elderly neighbors or those who might need extra help.

Hopefully Mother Nature will ease up on all of us soon.
Matt

As always, during this time of year be sure to have a backup heat source, always check on your neighbors during severe weather and remember the Lloyd M. Hall Community Center and Salyersville Fire Department are available when the need for warming stations arises. When using gas or wood to heat your home, be sure to use proper ventilation and a carbon monoxide detector can offer some much-needed safety and peace of mind.
Stay safe out there!
